Dean of Parsons: Will the Real Thakoon Please Stand Up?

It seems like everyday a new designer announces a diffusion line with an affordable retailer like Payless, H&M or Target, and with all these lower price point pieces running around, it got the Wall Street Journal thinking; how big is the difference and how easy is it to tell the real Thakoon from the Bergdorf's Thakoon for Target? The Journal recruited two experts— Simon Collins, dean of fashion at Parsons the New School for Design, and Randi Rahm, a designer based in Manhattan — to help them find the answer. Mixing a $1,145 dress with some pieces (all under $100) from the Thaikoon for Target line, the experts were asked to identify the expensive one. While Rahm was able to tell the difference, Dean Collins was not. Maybe he should sit in on a garment construction class this week.
